Bolted joints - tightening torque

“Anyone who has tried to work out the factors that affect the pre-stressing force in a bolted joint knows that it is hard and far from ideal to control the pre-stressing force via a given torque. That is why an understanding of the parameters that govern the pre-stressing force is important for optimising the resulting force on the bolted joint.”

The introduction of the Eurocode system and the accompanying implementation standard SS-EN 1090-2 offer several choices of method for fitting bolted joints in steel constructions. One of these is to run process tests on the relevant bolted joint, controlling the tightening parameters to optimise the pre-stressing force on the bolted joint.”
